The Project

QuickBase is designed and manufactured in the UK and as each project has a bespoke design, we’ve encountered a wide variety of different sites, shapes of extensions and site requirements.  The design can easily overcome any changes in levels on sloping sites and this is taken into account at the design stage.  In this example, an extreme slope was easily overcome with a bit of innovative thinking.  This thinking, along with the use of deep driven piles removing any need for cut and fill on sloping sites, minimises the need for mass excavation.

Any building is only as good as its foundation … and foundation failure is commonplace when they are not properly specified.

Shire are called in to repair failed foundations regularly particularly in clay belt areas with the associated heave and shrink issues.

One of our example projects, for a high-end conservatory and orangery manufacturer involved the complete rebuild of the conservatory. Since fitting, the conservatory had seen significant problems which included cracking to the brickwork and doors not fitting.  Shire conducted a thorough site visit, taking into account a wide variety of factors.  The cause of foundation failure was difficult ground conditions and a foundation design that hadn’t considered the reality of the ground conditions.  In the end, it was agreed that the best course of action would be a complete re-build of the conservatory using a QuickBase as the foundation system.  Both the conservatory manufacturer and householder were delighted with the end result.

The Project

A Northamptonshire kidney patient was given a home dialysis room in double-quick time, thanks to the award-winning QuickBase modular foundation system.

The objective was to create a room on the ground floor that the patient could easily access throughout the day.  It wasn’t possible to adapt the existing house due to its layout. Moving house completely was considered as an option but deemed to be disruptive to the patient and very expensive.

The area Health Authority recommended QuickBase. Having seen the system at a recent technical presentation, they’d seen that QuickBase is a rapid building system.  It was chosen as the most efficient method of installing an engineered foundation to support the “off-site” manufactured building, produced by PAB of Birmingham.

The patient remained in their home while building works were completed.  From start to finish, the foundations were installed, the superstructure was constructed and the room was fitted out with all required equipment – all in just 7 days.

Because of its unique design, the QuickBase system makes it simple. Excavation is kept to a minimum, with the spoil often being able to be backfilled between the QuickBase beams eliminating the need to barrow through the house which is time-consuming and potentially costly if damage occurs.
