Case Study

King’s School Boathouse

The Project

The new £2m boathouse at the King’s School in Worcester is a two storey steel framed structure located adjacent to the River Severn. The structure comprises a timber roof, a precast concrete floor and a suspended waterproof concrete ground floor. Waterproof concrete retaining walls were used at the back of the site due a significant change in ground levels.

The building had a complex geometry with the shape of it designed to look like a boat. A large cantilevered viewing area was constructed at the front of the building with views up and down the river.

The ground floor to the building is a boat storage area which is not insulated, with the upper level being a very well insulated gym with changing room facilities. The ground floor is designed to flood when the level of the River Severn is high.

This project commenced in December 2010 and was completed in early 2012. The project won the Midlands Regional RIBA Award in 2013.

Research & Development

We love a challenge! We were first asked to find a solution for repairing terraced houses in the City of London that had restricted access but needed structural support. That was in 1998 and the Shire Pile was created. Since then the R&D team at Shire have developed more products with a focus on restricted access, concrete-free, easy to install, removable and recyclable for a wide variety of applications. And there are plenty more solutions on the way. Contact us if you have an engineering challenge we can help to solve.
