A riverside sports development for Yarm School on the banks of the River Tees, combining piled foundations and retaining walls with hidden flood attenuation tanks beneath the pitch.
The Yarm School Boathouse and Astro Pitch brought together rowing facilities, a riverside gym and a new all-weather sports pitch on the banks of the River Tees. As the school's structural engineering consultants, we designed a scheme that met the demands of the riverside site while managing the flood risk that came with it.
Located on the banks of the River Tees in Stockton-on-Tees, the development combined rowing facilities, a riverside gym, changing accommodation, office facilities, boat storage and a new all-weather sports pitch. As experienced structural engineers, we were commissioned to help deliver a significant addition to the school's sporting campus, forming part of a wider programme of work we have carried out for Yarm School.
The structure utilised a steel frame with a distinctive V-shaped column overlooking the river, alongside steel portal frames, timber roof construction, composite concrete floors and piled foundations. Additional works included boat racking, canopies and retaining walls along the riverside frontage.
One of the key challenges was the site's proximity to the River Tees. The development occupied areas that had previously provided floodwater storage, meaning any new construction needed to account for the loss of that capacity without increasing flood risk elsewhere on the site.
This called for a solution that could manage rising river levels while still allowing the school to build the facilities it needed on a constrained riverside plot.

If you're looking to start a structural engineering project or would like a team of structural engineering consultants to support you, Shire is here to help.

To address the loss of floodwater storage, we designed attenuation tanks beneath the astro pitch to accommodate rising river levels without increasing flood risk elsewhere on the site. This hidden infrastructure allowed the school to gain a new sports pitch above ground while preserving the flood management function the site had previously provided.
Above ground, the steel frame features a distinctive V-shaped column overlooking the river, combined with steel portal frames, timber roof construction and composite concrete floors. Piled foundations were used to support the structure, while retaining walls along the riverside frontage helped define the boundary between the new development and the water.
Engineering is often at its best when it solves challenges that are largely invisible. In this case, the hidden flood-management infrastructure beneath the sports pitch was every bit as important as the building above it. Bringing together a steel frame, piled foundations, retaining walls and concealed flood attenuation within one riverside development required careful coordination between structural and flood risk considerations from the outset.
As an experienced structural engineering consultancy, we understand how to develop solutions for sites where flood risk shapes every decision. Our approach brings together foundation design, retaining wall construction and flood attenuation, helping us deliver riverside developments that protect both the buildings themselves and the land around them.
We work closely with schools, architects and contractors to develop solutions that are practical, compliant and tailored to each site's constraints.
If your project sits on a riverside or flood-sensitive site, get in touch with our team to discuss how our structural engineering consultants can help you build with confidence.
