
Located beside the River Severn, this RIBA award-winning boathouse for King's School Worcester combines flood-resilient design with a piled foundation solution on sensitive, historic ground.
Located directly beside the River Severn, the Michael Baker Boathouse at King's School Worcester was designed around a demanding set of structural, environmental and historic constraints. As the school's structural engineering consultants, we developed a solution that balanced flood resilience, complex geometry and sensitive ground conditions within one coordinated structural scheme.
The Michael Baker Boathouse is one of several projects we have delivered for King's School Worcester as part of our long-standing relationship with the school. As experienced structural engineers, we were commissioned to design a two-storey boathouse capable of withstanding regular flooding from the adjacent river, while still providing insulated, functional space above.
The building comprises a steel frame, timber roof, precast concrete upper floor and a robust suspended concrete ground floor. Its distinctive curved form was designed to evoke the shape of a boat, culminating in a glazed and cantilevered prow with views along the river towards Worcester's historic skyline.
Positioned directly beside the River Severn, the lower level of the boathouse needed to accommodate regular flooding rather than resist it. Robust materials were specified throughout this level, while more vulnerable plant and occupied accommodation were positioned above the anticipated flood levels.
Ground investigations also identified weak made ground beneath the building. The surrounding road, nearby retaining walls and archaeologically sensitive ground all needed protecting during construction, which limited how much excavation could take place.
The upper level was designed to house highly insulated training, changing and reception spaces. As the steel frame continued between the unheated storage area and the insulated accommodation above, careful attention was needed to prevent heat loss through the structure itself.

To address the weak ground conditions, we designed a piled foundation solution with reinforced concrete ground beams. This helped minimise excavation and reduce the risk of disturbing the adjacent road, nearby retaining walls and the archaeologically sensitive ground surrounding the site.
Rather than designing the lower level to resist floodwater, we allowed it to enter and drain away in a controlled manner. This level provides extensive rowing boat storage and was built using robust, flood-tolerant materials throughout.
Because the steel frame ran continuously between the unheated storage level and the insulated accommodation above, thermal breaks were incorporated into key steelwork connections to reduce heat transfer. Timber I-beams were also used within the upper walls and roof, allowing high levels of insulation while limiting thermal bridging.
The Michael Baker Boathouse brought together flood-resilient design, complex cantilevered geometry, archaeological constraints, restricted access and demanding thermal performance requirements within one coordinated solution.
