Gymnastics & Martial Arts Centre
The Gymnastics & Martial Arts Centre located adjacent to Alexander Stadium was a £5m Sports and Leisure facility completed in 2009.
The building consists of a large 1857 square metre hall for gymnastics and three martial arts areas for aikido, judo, karate, ju-jitsu, kendo and wrestling. The hall has retractable seating allowing for 450 spectators. Pits were created within the floor to allow for trampolines and other gymnastics equipment. The building also houses offices and changing room facilities for up to 100 gymnasts and coaches.
The building was designed to an Olympic standard to accommodate elite performers as well as the local community.
The structure of the building is steel framed with curved cellular beams forming the roof. The roof of the martial arts areas is a ‘green’ living roof allowing the building to blend in with the surrounding environment.
The site had a high water table which could have caused construction problems if not avoided. A shallow reinforced concrete ground beam solution was adopted above the water table which was supported by reinforced concrete piles.
