A fire within a ground floor grocery stall quickly spread over a number of food produce units, causing severe damage to the roof cladding and resulting in sections of the insulation and liner collapsing. Purlins, diagonal ties and anti-sag bars were severely damaged. Sections of the principal structural frame deformed as a result of the severe temperatures.
Shire were appointed by the Local Authority to carry out a visual structural inspection of all the steelwork members, initially to advise on what elements of the building could be re-opened for trading but also to confirm the extent of temporary and permanent structural repair works that would be required.
